Professor Mohan de Silva

The Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka, Prof. Mohan de Silva is a Senior Professor and Chair in Surgery and the former Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. He is one of the leading surgeons in the Country and an expert Endoscopic and Pancreato-Biliary surgeon. After completing earlier education at St. Thomas' College Gurutalawa, he moved to Nalanda College Colombo. He entered the Colombo Medical Faculty and graduated as a Medical Doctor in 1978. He obtained Master of Surgery from University of Colombo and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1984. He has had his higher surgical training in UK and worked as a consultant surgeon in National Health Service from 2007-2008.

Prof. de Silva is an Honorary Fellow of the Asia Pacific Society of Digestive Endoscopy and an Honorary Consultant Surgeon, Colombo South Teaching Hospital. He also serves as a temporary advisor to WHO-SEARO on Patient Safety. He was also the President of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka, Vice President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association and Director Education, of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka.

Considered as an excellent teacher and a clinical researcher, Prof. de Silva has many original papers and abstract publications in international and national journals and delivered several prestigious orations. The single author Surgical Textbook Publication, CLINICAL SURGERY MADE EASY - A Companion to Problem Based Learning which he published in 2008, is the first ever-Single Author Surgical Text Book published in UK by a Sri Lankan surgeon practicing in Sri Lanka. The 2nd revised edition is to be released shortly. He is also a Chapter contributor for Bailey and Love’s SHORT PRACTICE OF SURGERY 26th Edition, one of the most widely circulated surgical text books in the world and is the first ever Sri Lankan surgeon to be invited to contribute.

He has made a significant contribution in surgical evaluation and training, being an international examiner for MRCS Edinburgh Surgical Examination, International Examiner of the Association of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (MD Surgery Examination), senior postgraduate surgical trainer, senior examiner for MD Surgery PGIM (Sri Lanka) and an ERCP trainer for Postgraduate Medical Gastroenterology Training Programme.

Prof Mohan de Silva has served as a Civil Volunteer Surgeon for Sri Lanka Armed Forces during periods where services of such calibre was most needed by the country. He has held various positions and received number of awards in recognition of his valuable contributions as an academic and as a surgeon in the country.
