Workshop on Effective Research Higher Degree Supervision Practices

The "Workshop on Effective Research Higher Degree Supervision Practices" successfully conducted by the International Cooperation Division of Vice Chairman's Office, UGC in collaboration with the University of Melbourne, Australia on Friday 25th November 2016 in Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo.



The University Grants Commission bid at the General Assembly of the INQAAHE biennial conference in Bahrain from 27th February to 2nd March to host the next biennial conference of INQAAHE in 2019 Sri Lanka. The UGC is pleased to announce that Sri Lanka won the bid beating two other countries.

Hiran Tillakeratne Special Awards for research carried out during the period 01.06.2012 to 31.05.2014

The Hiran Tillekeratne Research Fund was established in 1990 by the University Grants Commission Sri Lanka (UGC) with a generous donation of Rs. 2.15 million made by Mr. Eardley Tillekeratne.

The main objective of this research fund is to provide financial assistance to enhance research capacities and reward the most outstanding research carried out in following six academic disciplines; 

  • Agriculture
  • Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Natural Sciences
  • Medicine
  • Economics 

The Award consists of a certificate and cash prize. Accordingly, 48 outstanding research projects conducted at 8 universities in above disciplines were funded from 1990 to 2013. 

The award ceremony of the Hiran Tillekeratne Research Fund for the Outstanding Postgraduate Research carried out during the period 01st June 2012 to 31st May 2014 was held on 11th December 2015 in the Board Room of the University Grants Commission.

It’s a great pleasure for us to congratulate the following award winners of the Hiran Tillekeratne Research Fund.

The event was presided by Professor Mohan de Silva, Chairman of the UGC and accompanied by the Dr. Priyantha Premakumara, Secretary of the UGC, Mr. Eardley Tillekeratne, donor of the Hiran Tillekeratne Research Fund and other UGC officials. 






Awareness Seminar for University Academics on the Consortium of Academic Libraries of Sri Lanka

With the objectives of increasing access to scholarly journals in a cost effective manner and increasing the research productivity of participating universities in high quality journals, the Consortium of Academic Libraries of Sri Lanka (CONSAL) was established.  Currently it has subscribed to five databases with the funding support of the UGC.

A seminar was organized by the Standing Committee of Library and Information Sciences of the UGC to raise awareness about CONSAL among university academics on 11th December 2015 in the UGC AuditoriumThe seminar was held under the leadership of the Vice Chairman, UGC Prof. PSM Gunarathne and the Chairman, SCOLIS Dr. R. Haniffa. Vice Chairman, UGC and the Chairman/SCOLIS expressed their intentions of developing further access to scholarly material for the benefit of the university community. Afternoon session was devoted to a SWOT analysis carried out by the groups of participants from each university to identify the future directions of CONSAL, to be presented to the UGC.
