AMENDMENTS TO PARA 5.6.2 OF SUB SECTION 5.6 OF CHAPTER (V) OF ESTABLISHMENTS CODE OF THE UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION (UGC)
AND THE HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
Your attention is invited to para 5.6.2 of sub section 5.6 of Chapter (V) of the Establishments Code of the University Grants Commission and the Higher Educational Institutions on release, reversion and termination of appointment.
The UGC at its 789th meeting held on 12.10.2009, having noted that provisions given in para 5.6.2 of Establishments Code with regard to granting of extension of service to university employees are in contrary to that of the Universities Act. No.16 of 1978 as amended, decided to amend para 5.6.2 of sub section 5.6 of Chapter (V) of Establishments Code of the UGC and the Higher Educational Institutions as follows:
“ 5:6:2 If the appropriate appointing authority is of the view that the retention of the person’s
services is essential for the work of the Commission/ Higher Educational Institution by
reason of his training, skill or qualifications or for the completion of a task allotted
to him, he may be allowed an extension of service beyond the age of fifty five years;
extensions being given one year at a time.”
The above provisions are effective from 12th October 2009.
The other circular instructions which were issued in connection with the extension of service beyond the optional age of retirement of university staff, will remain unchanged.
Please take action accordingly.
